All throughout redemptive history, the greatest covenantal promise that the believers throughout the ages have been clinging to is the promise of God's abiding presence with His people.
Abraham needed to hear it, as did Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, David, Solomon, and everyone else in between.
In the midst of a hostile world, the small remnant of Jews needed God's reassurance that He was with them if they were going to go forth in faith and build the Temple.
We, with them, are in desperate need of God's assuarance that He is with us and for us. This promise was fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ, Immanuel (God with us), whose sinless life, death, and resurrection has purchased the new covenant promise of the Holy Spirit, who takes up residence in all those who are born-again by the Spirit.
Obedience is impossible without this divine enabling work of the Spirit.
The church has much to learn from Haggai's oracle of reassurance as they take the gospel of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth, thus building His glorious Temple, to the praise of His glory!
