The book of Ruth reports events that took place during the period of the judges. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the legitimacy of David’s kingship despite his Moabite ancestress, Ruth. Some key truths we will encounter in our study are: 1) God’s providence is sometimes harsh, but in the end, he works for the blessing of his people. 2) Familial love and devotion that are guided by God’s word bring joy and happiness. 3) David’s family was God’s chosen, honorable, royal line. Christ is revealed in the book of Ruth primarily in the way in which the book witnesses to the legitimacy of David’s kingship.
