Here at the opening of this seventh chapter we find Paul taking up again, the through expressed earlier, "For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace." In the earlier parts of Paul's focus upon the doctrine of sanctification "not under law, but under grace" is what provides the confirmation or assurance that sin does not have dominion over the life of the one who believes upon Christ. Paul now, in chapter seven how it is that we have been set free, using the concept and clear language of covenant, so that we might not remain ignorant of the way things are, having been set free in Christ Jesus, no longer under law, but under grace. Do you not know how it is that sin no longer reigns? Then look to your Deliverer who has wed you to Himself and you are no longer the slave-wife of sin, but united to the One who has washed you with His precious blood.
