“ Insightful and Encouraging ”
I was reminded in this sermon of how Bunyan describes in his book, Grace Abounding to The Chief of Sinners, one of the ways that he was taught of The Spirit to interpret God’s Word correctly while Satan was suggesting false interpretations and applications to him, in order to confuse and discourage him greatly.
Bunyan says that he was enabled to see, through this experience of satan’s attempts to deceive him, that he was to “labor to take The Word as God had laid it down, without restraining the force of one syllable thereof”. Prior to this he had been afraid to carefully look into the meaning of some threatening verses.
Satan, of course, is real, and he engages in this practice now attempting to discourage and lead to despair those who come to Christ for salvation.
Pastor Thackway, in this sermon takes an interesting and seeming obscure verse of scripture, and doing just as Bunyan learned to do, he takes each syllable of this verse in its force and scope as God put it down, and thereby derives great lessons for us.
